A very old Christmas eve tradition in Germany is to hide a pickle [ornament] deep in the branches of the family Christmas Tree. The parents hang the pickle last after all the other ornaments are in place. In the morning the first child to find the elusive ornament will receive an extra gift from St. Nicholas.
